How Heavy Is Thor’s Hammer?

According to mythology, the Norse god Thor wields a hammer called Mjölnir. Marvel has expanded Thor’s place in popular culture by publishing comics about Thor, and also has graciously brought us movies on this topic starring Chris Hemsworth.

Thor’s hammer is alleged to have been forged within the core of a dying star, though according to some versions of the comic, Mjölnir is made of Uru, a metal that comes from Asgard only. It is said that the hammer has a weight of 42.3 pounds in the Uru versions. However, the dying star origin is used in other volumes of the comic, as well as in the movie.

Mjölnir also comes with an enchantment that only the worthy might possess the great power of Thor and pick up it. Here comes the question: is it really Odin’s enchantment that stops others from picking up Thor’s hammer, or is it the material that Mjölnir is made of just too heavy for others to lift without god-like strength?
