The largest and most sensitive radio telescope in the world is near to completion in China. To present its magnificence, China Central Television has used the drone to reveal its latest development, as well as its unbelievably huge size.

Located among the foggy hills of Pingtang County, Guizhou Province of southwest China, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) is in its final stage of construction. It started to be built in 2011 and would be completed in 2016 when it will turn to be the biggest radio telescope all over the globe. With the diameter of 500 meters, its dish will be larger than that of 300 meters at Puerto Rico’s Arecibo Observatory. .

Being interviewed with Xinhua News, Mr. Wu Xiangping, the director-general of the Chinese Astronomical Society, said that a more sensitive telescope would allow scientists to receive weaker and more distant radio messages, which would be much helpful in human search for intelligent life outside of the galaxy and their knowledge about the origins of the universe.

For such an unprecedented project, China has to raise an equally enormous fund, which is estimated to be around 700 million yuan equaling 110,328,309 US dollars.
